Knowing when and how to use email is important, if you are selling products in the B2B environment with the right message you can expect some very good return on your email.

Getting Started - getting started, first you need some software, when I first started email marketing 5-years ago I did extensive research in this area. There are many software providers varying levels complexity, I decided on an inhouse piece of software that enabled an unlimited number of lists, unlimited number of campaigns and gave complete control over my data lists.

The software I recommend to start with is Email Marketing Director. This software offered everything I needed at the right cost with a one off cost of £350.00.

Getting the data - Once you have sussed the software you need data, you may already have a list of clients email addresses, if not, you need to buy in "cleansed" "opt in" data from a list bureau. I have provided a list of data bureau below, you can define your market list by many different area, industry, job title, area, new business and so on.

Planning your campaign - from experience designing glitzy emails with nice images and good design don't tend to work. I ran a test, I took one set of content and made two email campaigns, one with nice design the other a simple text based email. I was surprised that I had over twenty times more response from a simple text-based email than I did the nicely designed one.

This proves that people prefer a personal approach over nice design, if you talk your message rather than shout, you are in with a better chance. But as with most forms of advertising, it's hitting the right person at the right time that will give you the ultimate result.
